Cities and some urban areas gather and treat waste at waste water treatment facilities.  While rural areas and some areas within cities treat waste using septic systems known as home sewage treatment systems (HSTSs).  Leaking and poorly maintained HSTSs release nutrients and pathogens (bacteria and viruses) that can be picked up by storm water, discharged into nearby waterbodies, and  cause public health problems and environmental concerns.
